After I jumped into dressmaking I quickly realized it is VERY different than simple projects like curtains and pillow cases. I was so confused and frustrated. How was I ever going to make something I would love wearing? With some help of some wonderful friends during sewing circles I finally finished my first dress. This is what sewing my first dress taught me.
Lessons Learned Sewing My First Dress
This post is not about sewing techniques I learned, but rather what I learned about my own sewing process.
Set Time Limits.
I realized very quickly that after about an hour or so I would get so frustrated learning this new art. Once I was frustrated, I would rush and do sloppy work. Once I set a time limit of 45 minutes to an hour and then took a break I could come back and not be frustrated. Sometimes the break was 15 minutes, sometimes the break was 2-3 days.
Taking a break from a project can also give you a fresh perspective if you are running into an issue.
One Step at a Time.
Looking and thinking about everything that goes into making a dress is exhausting and gave me a feeling of defeat. I then decided to only look at the current step or one part of the dress. Once I focused my attention I did a better job.
Don’t Sew Alone.
I had envisioned my dress one way and then once a friend saw the dress, she offered suggestions that made my dress go from blah to WOW. I consider myself pretty creative, but sometimes more eyes can help you figure out a problem or give suggestions to add an added wow factor to your outfit. Sewing circles and online Facebook groups are great resources!
Take Pride in Your Work.
My first dress is a mess if you look at the details. Do I love the dress any less? Nope! I know that I am going to keep on making dresses and each one will get better and better.
About My First Dress
My dress is a self drafted pattern with a sweetheart neckline and a full circle skirt. I got the red material at JoAnn Fabric Store. (Related Post: Tips & Tricks on How to Save Money at Joann’s) My friend Sherri gifted me the black lace accent and my friend Minnie gifted me the button on the back. I added a white petticoat underneath and black ballet flats.
